Collaboration:
How will you facilitate an authentic collaborative learning experience to promote deeper student engagement with content skills and concepts?

I will begin by introducing and engaging learners with the PBL scenario. Students will create a group wiki and individual pages for each member on their group wiki. I will then discuss with students effective strategies for collaborating ideas on this project. Students will brainstorm ideas about basic concepts of atoms and molecules after watching brainpop.com videos and discuss these ideas on their wiki. Each student will respond and comment on discussion questions in their group wiki. I will monitor and give active feedback to learners on their wiki pages. Students will interact and work on their PBL scenario during class and on their wiki. They will investigate and share ideas about matter, atoms and compounds from web resources that will be shared through group wikis. Student’s final presentation will be a collaborative presentation of information and discussions from their wiki and group assignments.

As members of collaborative groups, how will you support student’s efforts to identify solutions to the problem you are using as the framework for your PBL instructional unit?

I will create assignments that challenge students to work together. I will also provide resources and ideas that will allow learners to develop creative solution in this PBL process. These creative solutions will assist learners in developing ideas and knowledge about content information. The students will work with their group members to create notes with Google docs on important content from group assignments. These notes will be used as a resource as each students respond to discussion questions and comments on their member’s wiki individual page.

What criteria will you use to assign learners to collaborative groups, including a rationale? What will be the size of the collaborative groups you will include in your unit?

I will create heterogeneous groups to maximize peer teaching and interaction. I believe that a diverse group of learners are better suited to develop, interact and challenge each other than in other group dynamics. Each group will consist of four members that are equally responsible for content and peer interactions.

Which digital tools and websites are you considering for collaboration in your unit?

I will use a combination of wikispaces.com as the primary collaborative tool for this project. Students will also use brainpop.com, as well as google.com to investigate content specific topics. Finally students will use Google docs to share ideas and interact with each other on group assignments.

How will you assess participation of the students in their collaborative groups?

I will develop a rubric that will assess the role and what’s expected of each group member. This rubric will be shared with the students at the beginning of the PBL and it must be signed by parents to acknowledge that they are aware of the assessment procedure. Group members will be graded on participation, presentation and the quality of the final product.
